Marshall Book Editing

“Write without fear. Edit without mercy.”

~ Tom Allbrighton

On Editing

An editor is like a surgeon. A manuscript, newly finished, full of effort and love and the hope of the author, is placed tenderly into the hands of the editor, who will, with all the precision and expertise their training has given them, cut into it without compunction or squeamishness, finding the heart of the story and trimming the rest away.

Development editing comes first. This phase is about strengthening your book’s foundations: plot, pacing, characters, themes, voice, and (my favourite) worldbuilding. We assess the book as a whole and identify what’s working and what isn’t.

Then, the copyedit. We drill down into the language, focusing on style, rhythm, imagery, and characterisation. Every word contributes to a reader’s experience, so we examine each one to ensure it’s pulling its weight.

My editing services are completely bespoke, unique for each author and project. No project is too big or small; I’m happy to work with you no matter which phase of writing you’re in. If you’re in the middle of an outline and want a second opinion on your story arcs, I’ll jump on a call and hash it out. If you’re on draft number five and have lost all perspective, I’ll be your fresh pair of eyes.

Send me an enquiry and I’ll do my best to help.

About Me

Have you ever been offered a job based purely on your passionate defence of the serial comma? Slammed your hand on a table and exclaimed, ‘The semicolon is a thing of beauty!’ at top volume? Spent hours re-reading prose, trying to decide what’s made it so rhythmic and resonant?

Well, I have.

For over ten years, I’ve honed my skills as a professional editor. Grammar is a language all on its own, and one I speak fluently. I understand the inseparability of narrative structure and narrative itself. I know how to build tension and swing into emotional payoff. I know when dialogue sounds unnatural, and more importantly, why.

Most of all, I know how to adopt an author’s vision. Every story can be told a million different ways, and your voice is what makes your work special. Some editors will ‘refine’ your work so much it’s not really yours anymore. Not so me. I want to work with you, not overwrite your ideas with mine.

My working style is fundamentally collaborative—your priorities are my priorities; your vision is my vision—but be warned: Once I get my teeth into a draft, I don’t let go. You can look forward to ruthless scrutiny, thousands of comments, and in general the thorough overturning of ground you thought well and truly covered.

Editing is not for the faint of heart, but have courage. I’ll be with you every step of the way.

Testimonials

  • “Amy Marshall was the development editor for my novel, 'The Afterlife, Incorporated.' It wasn't called that at the time—as well as unearthing plot holes and inconsistencies with the characterisation, Amy suggested a more telling title than the one I had. Amy approaches dev. editing with empathy and insight; she not only helps you improve your novel, she helps you become a better writer, so your next book will be even better, and the following book will be better still. Ultimately Amy helps you connect with your love of writing, and that is highest accolade I can give.”

    ~ Craig Smith, author

  • “Amy has an extraordinary ability to clarify anything we put in front of her. She can get to the heart of a messy draft and pull it out to be front and centre. Our authors love her.”

~ Emily Holbrook, Senior Commissioning Editor working in educational publishing

  • “In a highly skilled and professional team of editors, Amy has always been the best. She is truly interested in the content she works with and consistently demonstrates not only outstanding editorial skills but also a deep understanding of the texts. In addition to outstanding performance, Amy is also a great colleague – respectful, responsible, reliable, and kind to the people she works with. It has been a true honour to work together.”

~ Roman Jouravlev, ITIL Senior Architect at PeopleCert

  • “If I had a life-or-death grammar question, I’d call Amy.”

~ Tom Young, Commissioning Editor working in educational publishing
